The Lightning That Bent

Photograph a lightning strike on a phone and you may capture something the human eye never sees: a bolt that appears to bend, kink, or split into offset segments, as if the sky's electricity had been sliced and reassembled slightly out of true.

The lightning did no such thing. The camera did.

Nearly every phone and mirrorless camera uses a CMOS sensor with a rolling shutter. Rather than exposing the entire frame at once, the sensor reads its pixels line by line, sweeping from top to bottom over a few thousandths of a second. For a landscape or a portrait, this scan is far too quick to matter. But lightning operates on a different clock.

A single flash isn't one event. It's a rapid sequence of return strokes, each lasting tens of microseconds, flickering along the same channel over perhaps a fifth of a second. As the sensor's read-out line marches down the frame, the visible portion of the bolt changes between one row and the next. The top of your image records the channel as it looked at one instant; the bottom records it a fraction later, when a subsequent stroke has wandered a few metres sideways. Stitch those rows together and the bolt appears to jog, offset like a fault line in rock.

The same mechanism gives you the wobbling propeller blades and the leaning-tower buildings you see when filming from a moving car. Photographers call the general effect the "jello" distortion. With lightning it produces something stranger, because the subject itself is moving and pulsing faster than the shutter can track.

Global-shutter sensors, which capture the whole frame simultaneously, sidestep the problem entirely, which is one reason they command a premium in cinema cameras and scientific imaging. The old mechanical focal-plane shutters had their own version of the trick: Jacques-Henri Lartigue's 1912 photograph of a racing car shows the wheels leaning forward and the spectators tilting back, a distortion produced by a slit travelling across the film.

So the next time a storm hands you a bolt with a kink in it, the honest caption isn't "lightning does that." It's that your camera, reading the sky one thin stripe at a time, caught the flash mid-flicker and drew you a picture of time itself, sliced into rows.
