The Ghost of the Elm

When a tree is felled and its trunk hauled away, we tend to consider the matter settled. The skyline changes, the shade is gone, the stump is ground into sawdust. Yet beneath the manicured turf of a suburban lawn, a slow, silent insurrection begins. Where an oak or elm once stood, a thick tawny congregation of mushrooms eventually erupts from the grass, tracing the phantom geometry of the roots buried below. This is not random decay but the visible signature of the mycelial network spreading underground.

Fungi work slowly. For centuries they were dismissed as parasites or botanical afterthoughts; we now recognize the "Wood Wide Web," a biological infrastructure that predates humanity by hundreds of millions of years. When a tree is removed, the fungal hyphae—gossamer-thin threads invisible to the naked eye—do not simply die off. They set to work deconstructing what is left, secreting digestive enzymes into the stubborn dead wood of the old root system and recycling carbon and nitrogen back into the earth. The mushrooms we see aboveground are only the reproductive organs of this hidden operation, "fruiting bodies" pushed upward to release spores into the wind.

Our relationship with these visitors has always been divided. The world splits into mycophiles, who read a mushroom as a sign of healthy, living soil, and mycophobes, who take its sudden appearance as a herald of rot and ruin. In the nineteenth century the sight of a "fairy ring" in the garden was often met with superstition; today it is more likely to be met with a lawnmower. Yet to remove them is to ignore the work they do. By breaking down the heavy lignin of the old tree, the fungus keeps the soil from becoming a tomb of inert organic matter.

These dense patches of brown caps make the point that nothing in nature is ever really "removed." The tree is gone, but its energy remains, meticulously bartered and traded by the fungi.
