The Architecture of Hellfire

On the black volcanic sands of the Pacific, a Marine carrying a portable flamethrower could expect to live for minutes. The task was as unforgiving as the geography: to be effective, an operator had to haul seventy pounds of volatile fuel to within thirty yards of a fortified bunker, which made him a slow, high-visibility target for every sniper on the ridge. The casualty rate for these men approached ninety-two percent—a tactical necessity that amounted to a suicide mission.

The fix came out of a workshop at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii, where a composite unit of Army ordnance men and Naval Construction Battalions—the Seabees—started an experiment in brutal simplicity. The Navy had just rejected a consignment of heavy flamethrowers as too cumbersome for infantry use. The Seabees took the discards and bolted them onto the chassis of M3 light tanks, cutting the Army’s over-engineered firing mechanism from a hundred moving parts down to half a dozen.

These machines, christened "Satans" and later nicknamed "Zippos," rewrote the island campaigns. With the main gun replaced by a nozzle that could throw thickened napalm nearly a hundred and fifty yards, a crew could incinerate a concrete pillbox from well beyond the reach of small-arms fire. The effect on morale ran ahead of the flame: defenders who had sat unmoved through conventional artillery and naval barrages reportedly bolted at the sight of the mechanized dragons.

By the height of the fighting the tanks had become a prerequisite for movement. Infantry assaults would grind to a halt, the men refusing to advance until a flame tank could be brought forward to clear the path. The desperate courage of the lone operator had been retired, replaced by a machine that solved the problem of human frailty by dispensing fire from a safe distance.
